• Business Lessons – From Mom

  • by Amy Dix

Building a business can be hard…extremely hard. There are late nights. Nights when you don’t get any sleep simply because your mind is spinning with ideas. There are times when you want to quit. Then you talk yourself out of it, only to change your mind again and think you should throw in the towel. There are “holy crap” moments, “what did I do” moments, and “I can’t go on” moments. But for every one of those moments, there are “OMG! I am actually doing this” moments, “I can change the world” moments, and “I will never give up” moments.

With the recent passing of my mom, I think of her often and the life lessons she taught me. While the lessons for life are endless, by her own admittance, she was not a “business person” – she reserved those talents for my dad and me. However, she would be proud to know that hidden business lessons are intertwined with all of those life lessons.

In every moment, there is a lesson learned. There are probably hundreds of lessons learned while starting and building a business. Lessons are great for reflection. But, unless you are acting on them, you might as well file them away on an old bookshelf with your worn-out encyclopedias and let them gather dust.

Google the phrase “lessons learned for running a successful business” and you’ll find thousands of articles from opinionated business people. There’s no need to get caught up in those pages and pages of lessons in business. Let’s go back to the basics. Much of what your mother taught you when you were a small child can also apply to running a business. Acting on the mere foundation of what made you who you are today will do wonders for your business. Here are five lessons that we learned from our moms that hold true when it comes to doing business.

“Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You”

“I love doing business with people I can’t stand!” – said no one ever. Always be polite, be nice and don’t be afraid to go the extra mile for your customers. They will turn into your ambassadors and help spread the word for you.

“There’s No Second Chance to Make a Good First Impression”

You have a mere seven seconds to make a good first impression. Make sure the first interaction you have with your potential customers is a good one. This means your brand must be professional and engaging. At the other end of every bit of communication – including emails, social media posts and your website – is a real person who needs your help.

    “Express Yourself”

Now more than ever, self-expression is important. Find a way to be unique, to stand out. The best way to do that is to simply be you. Highlight what makes you…you! People will connect with someone who is authentic, yet see right through someone who is “putting on a show.” Be the best version of who you can be. After all, being true to yourself takes the work out of having to try to be someone else. Your clients will love you for it.

    “Never Tell a Lie”

We see it every day…people stretching the truth, desperate to get a client. Aggressive marketing tactics may work in the short term, but they won’t allow you to build a sustainable business. Building it on strong core values, like always telling the truth and making good on your word, will.

    “Be Patient”

When I was a teenager, my mom would tell me, “Amy, be patient.” I would respond, “Patience is a virtue that I do not possess.” Oh, how I have changed! It takes patience to get a business off the ground. Make sure you’re prepared to stick it out until you make it.

Be patient with the people you work with. This includes customers, employees, independent contractors or other business owners you’re partnering with. We are all busy and sometimes things don’t work out exactly as planned. Give those around you the benefit of the doubt and be patient with them. Showing a little bit of grace may end up in long-term friendships that will benefit your business for years to come.

So, remember, “mom knows best.” Act on those lessons that you learned from her as a child and your business will soar!
